‘The Martian’ Review: This Movie Will Make You Appreciate Planet Earth More
After watching this 2015 science fiction film, The Martian, i tend to appreciate planet Earth more, as it’s the only planet that can sustain life to the fullest. I stumbled on a research paper while i was writing a paper on a carbon storage in forest ecosystems, which was about carbon storage measurement in Mars. I found that really cool and i turned to my lab colleague to checkout the paper and he found it cool too, which led to him recommending that watch this science fiction movie about Mars as well, The Martian. Honestly, the movie is a great one, showing how valuable the Earth is and how barren and aggressive other planets are.
The Martian movie is about Mark Watney (Matt Damon), who his crew thought was dead and left behind in plant Mars after being blasted by a fierce storm. With only a meager amount of supplies, the stranded visitor must utilize his wits and spirit to find a way to survive on the hostile planet. Meanwhile, back on Earth, members of NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring him home, while his crew mates hatch their own plan for a daring rescue mission.
Mark, the guy in question in the movie, had to make a green house in Mars, planting potatoes with his own faeces in order to sustain himself. According to the movie, he was able to survive because he was a Botanist and had some scientific knowledge of natural chemistry. Although, the movie settings made it pretty much easier to survive in Mars than reality such that, his crew members left their supplies and work stations in the planet. The crew members left their computers as well, which is not feasible in the real world, as all the things Mark’s crew members left was what he lived on, and they were of high-techs. So, Mark actually had nice house, electricity, enough oxygen, and the only limiting resource was food, which kind of falsify the reality of the story to some extent.
The Martian would have been real and more informative if the storm had destroyed the work station (house), if had limited oxygen, if he had very limited access to tech, if he actually reach the gate of death, but he even had a vehicle and a nice shower in Mars. However, despite the movie script flaws, it’s still a great movie to watch and recommended for students and kids to watch in order to learn some stuffs about Mars.
