Jared Leto used blind contact lenses to effectively blind himself for Blade Runner 2049 movie, which made his eyes look opaque, reducing his visibility, and had to be helped around the set while walking. Director Denis Villeneuve said:
“He could not see at all. He was walking with an assistant, very slowly. It was like seeing Jesus walking into a temple,” Denis recalled. “Everybody became super silent, and there was a kind of sacred moment. Everyone was in awe. It was so beautiful and powerful – I was moved to tears.”
As Jared transformed himself into Niander character, he added:
“We all heard stories about Jared, how he transforms into the characters. But even this didn’t prepare me for what was to come,” he said, describing some of Jared’s acting decisions as “insane”.
“(But) he really created something. Every time Jared came on set, it was a boost of energy, tension, and excitement.”
However, Jared told the magazine of his characterization for the film: “I didn’t dive as deep down the rabbit hole as maybe I’ve done before”. He added that while he tried to live as a blind person, he was never under the impression that he was actually blind, laughing: “I’m crazy, but I’m not insane.”
